Relocating for a job is not a new concept; neither is the fact that many companies will pay to relocate you. However, since the economic downswing beginning in 2007, the number and the size of these benefits has dwindled. The good news is that if an organization is considering you, they may be willing to provide relocation assistance.

 

Prior to the early 2000’s, jobs offering assistance with relocation were very generous. A relocation package was expected when one moved across State lines. Generally, they might have purchased your old home (or your new home), paid rent while you get settled in the area, reimbursed you for living expenses, and paid the cost to move you. Now, the relocation assistance landscape has changed somewhat. There are still plenty of jobs that pay for relocation.

In tighter economic times, what type of compensation to expect or request is uncertain, at best. Just like any other job benefit, it should be negotiated. But, in order to make it an item to be negotiated, relocation assistance must be put on the table.
